Evan the sandhill crane colt

Okay FINALLY I get a good look at Evan, the 4 months old sandhill crane colt that was named by a child guest while still an egg. Despite the name we don’t know its sex—everybody will find out by next spring when Evan’s voice and behaviour change. That’s also when it gets its final adult colours, losing most of his bronzy baby feathers and gaining the characteristic red “heart” on its face.

Also pictured: Evan’s parents. From what the Reifel employee was telling us, dad is in the foreground and mom is heading into the water.
