Traveling through the lava fields

People used to travel through here. By foot only, since horses can’t manage this green and black hellscape. And before the old road was smoothed out for motor vehicles, it was marked out by cairns — 1- to 3-foot conical piles of rock spaced out so that when you reached one, the next should be clearly visible. Thus you could follow a route that guaranteed the best balance between least number of steps taken and least number of rolled ankles.
