Tomb of Louis XVII

Tomb of Louis XVII, who died in prison in 1795 at age 10. Though he never had a formal coronation, tradition says that he really became king when his father Louis XVI died in 1793, and so his uncle claimed the throne as Louis XVIII in 1815.

Also, that’s his heart there in the little alcove. Maybe. Legend says that little Louis’ heart was removed the day after his death by the prison’s chief surgeon, placed in an alcohol-filled crystal vase and then passed from hand to hand, eventually ending up in Saint-Denis in 1975. It was formally buried here in 2004.
