The dutiful Osprey and the trespassing bear

A fable for the 21st century

Old Orchard Park

Another look at the heron babbies. I think we just hit the end of our viewing window. Much later than this and they would be starting to leave the nests. But right now we’ve got some pics of these adorable little muppety monsters.

Blakeburn Lagoons Park

I don’t think I visited here before and it’s… fine? Your usual assortment of duckies and whatnot, but not really anything that makes it stand out. Well, except the fact that it’s a reclaimed wastewater site in the middle of deepest darkest suburbia, that part is really interesting. Plus, it’s a nice little spot for jogging and such.

Suburbia

No great birb pics, but here’s a lovely Tiger Swallowtail!

Pretty and delicate

DeBoville Slough (north trail)

Another new spot! Not sure what it would offer, but it at least looked like a nice trail leading to Pitt River. Also here’s a Red-tailed Hawk, I think?

Some kind of raptor very high up in the blue sky. The underwings are relatively light, and the tail a bit reddish, so it's probably a Red-tailed Hawk
On patrol

And here’s a female Eight-spotted Skimmer having a little rest in reach of our cameras.

I mean it’s okay I guess

A green landscape under a solid blue sky, with rolling green mountains in the background and sharper snowy mountains even further back
Fine, the scenery is gorgeous

Oh look, even more gorgeous scenery.

A wide, calm river, with low mountains in the background. There are a bunch of pilings of various sizes in the water
This river is the Pitts, get it?

Hey, an Osprey nest, right across from the trail as it turns north to hug the river. At first there wasn’t much to see, just this bird presumably sitting on eggs and panting in the sun…

An Osprey sitting in its nest, on top of a big piling in the water. There are trees and green things in the far background. Its beak is open, it might be panting

… but then it went for a little flap up the river a ways, and came back. I don’t think it was actually fishing, just needed to stretch its wings a bit.

The Osprey is landing on its nest, wings still up and spread
Nest sweet nest
Now the Osprey is facing us, wings still up
Getting comfy?

On the way back we saw a bear casually strolling through the neighbouring fields like it owned the place. That’s Coquitlam for you!

Un-bear-able
