Around Lost Lagoon

All the cute little birds

Just a little Sunday afternoon, walking around Lost Lagoon. Especially nice since the weather was terrible Saturday, which is when I normally go birding.

You don’t often see goldeneyes of either species in Lost Lagoon, they seem to prefer open waters — but still not too open! They still tend to stick fairly close to the seawall, presumably because the critters they dive for live close to the surface.

A pear-shaped Song Sparrow giving me all the attitude! And as a bonus, it’s showing off every streak and speck of its beautiful outfit. Song Sparrows really don’t get enough love for their looks, I feel, being the epitome of the Little Brown Job. But there’s something so special about their thick grey “eyebrows”, little swoopy patterns on their cheeks, white bib, and whatnot.

I guess you just have to see it from the right angle.

This Bufflehead gal didn’t make it easy for me… they can get close to shore, but these shy little things often hide from my camera behind bushes and reeds. Still, sometimes I get lucky.

Wait, is this the same Song Sparrow as above? No, I think that one was sitting across one of the little side ponds near the west end, while these next two photos were taken about 20 minutes later and further down the trail. The background vegetation looks pretty identical, I’ll grant you.

On the way back home, I spied this little guy up in a tree, so perfectly framed by these early spring buds!
