The starlings and the bugs

Shiny and hungry

Vancouver, downtown seawall

Starlings generally avoid my camera. I’m not really sure why, but they’re out and about foraging, they tend to be way more skittish than robins or sparrows.

However: on this day they were crowding around the seawall by the dozen, and soon I realised why: the tide was low, and those little multi-legged isopod things were crawling all over the rocks. Sometimes I feel they’re a bit transparent, but I guess they’re just really good at camouflage. Regardless, there’s good eatin’ on those things, and the starlings love them. So much so, in fact, that they didn’t seem to mind my presence so much. With a bit of patience I was able to get some excellent pose-y shots, and a few more shots with their wiggly prey. A nice little outing!
