Hiding heron child

I was on a heron walking tour led by the Stanley Park Ecology Society, and our last stop was the heron nursery by the tennis courts. This adorable kid was hiding by one of the nest trees, and I just too this quick picture.

The guide explained that many nests would be abandoned by parents since most chicks would have fledged by now, though they might still use the nests as a home base. However, they’d be getting increasingly territorial and fighty with their siblings.
