High Altar

The High Altar, consecrated in 1647 as the finishing touch to St. Stephen’s Baroque redesign. The painting behind it, framed in black marble, represents the stoning of St Stephen (one of the early Christian martyrs, so the story goes), and is surrounded by statues of various Austrian saints.
