Old Town Hall memorial

In the underground (mostly made of older buildings that were later built over) is this memorial to people who lost their lives defending the Old Town Hall in 1945. This was part of the May 1945 Prague Uprising, in which the Czech Resistance attempted to liberate the city from Nazi occupation. The Old Town Hall was severely damaged by artillery fire and then an actual fire. If I remember what the guide told us, this cross wrapped in the national colours is made from wooden beams taken from that fire.

Just a few days afterwards, the Red Army marched in to finally liberate Prague.
