Montmartre Cemetery

A welcome shady respite from the heat of the day! Opened in 1825, it was one of several new cemeteries set up around that time just outside the (then) city limits, because overcrowded cemeteries within Paris were causing all sorts of problems.

The cemetery was built in the hollow of an abandoned gypsum quarry, meaning much of it is below street level. You don’t really notice it at first because you’re still on a hill, and “street level” doesn’t mean a whole lot. But you will definitely notice the viaduct of Rue Caulaincourt above the single entrance.
