Blue Savannah Song

Sweet to surrender

Blackie Spit

The trail up Blackie Spit proper, behind the secondary parking lot, is a great spot for Savannah Sparrows. Not to say it’s necessarily great if you want to take photos of them! They are shy little guys, great at blending in with beached logs and tall grasses.

However! There was one Savannah Sparrow very near the bench at the far end of the trail, singing its little heart out. Two French Canadian ladies were sitting there enjoying the performance, and honestly I couldn’t help envying them. They asked the bird’s name and we told them, because that’s what Good Birders do.

Since it seemed to be Perform For The Humans Day, we also shot a White-crowned Sparrow posing like nobody’s business amidst white cherry blossoms. Pure art!

Serpentine Fen

The weather was getting greyer and the light dimmer, and sadly there just weren’t that many bird shots up to my exacting standards. Serpentine Fen is very hit and miss when it comes to birbs, so that wasn’t so unexpected. I did get some nice shots of the fields and of course of Mount Baker, though!

Green Timbers Lake

I suggested this place specifically because a Tufted Duck — a rarity around here! — had been reported. Unfortunately it left Stan a bit underwhelmed. Me as well, if I’m honest. It’s been three years since Prague, and I can’t help but compare those shots with this one. Oh well, maybe this is a sign I need to travel back to Prague.
