Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

A female Mallard is swimming along in murky water, surrounded by nine small ducklings

It seemed like every other species had been getting into the game and finally Mallards caught up, with a most delightful (and numerous) family hanging about in the main pond. I took excellent photos of the tiny ducklings, and marvelled at how, even now, their down was pretty much totally hydrophobic. They wandered south and I followed them, allowing for some nice duckling closeups!

Also, congrats to me for adding to my collection of birds pooping. This time, a Spotted Towhee on the east dyke trail. I admit it’s not my best photo but hey: we must keep trying!

Terra Nova Rural Park

A big field with patches of yellow flowers, and in the background some trees and bushes, and nice suburban houses. Sky is mainly blue with a few wispy clouds

Driving in, and later walking along the open fields, I couldn’t help envying a little at the nice houses along the east side of the park, and along the river. It must be pretty nice. Then I realised you still have to drive everywhere! Mind you, there are buses a few blocks away on Westminster Hwy, and biking on the river trail right to the Olympic Oval and the SkyTrain is always an option. I guess there are always trade-offs!
