The splash and the buzz

More of the grebes

Blakeburn Lagoons Park

Oh yeah, we’re back. And in happy news, it looks like the family hanging around the east pond still has 5 lively and hungry chicks!

Got some nice shots of ladybugs too, even though the light was a bit too overcast for my exacting tastes.

Still no Green Heron. I don’t even know if it’s a long-term resident in these parts. Maybe just as well, though, because the grebelings don’t need that kind of predator hanging around.

Blackie Spit

For some reason I had a hankering to visit this spot, even though it was maybe an hour’s drive away. Maybe that was a mistake, since the tide was low, which meant no shorebirds, and I didn’t even get good shots of Savannah Sparrows or any other birds for that matter. But I can always rely on Blackie Spit for nice landscape shots, and — at this time of year — excellent pollinator shots. Also the clouds had cleared up, so that was nice.

Piper Spit, Burnaby Lake

I feel Piper Spit is kind of a mixed bag, especially at this time of year. On the one hand, the ducks and geese are always fun to shoot. On the other hand, there’s just not that much variety in species. On the other other hand, we had to see all the miscreants and criminals feeding the birds, and their hellspawn running after the birds.

The so-called Butterfly Garden outside the Nature House didn’t even have a lot of flowers out, and no good pollinator photo ops. Boo.
