Blackie Spit
The Vancouver Queer Birders are heading to Blackie Spit! We timed it to very late afternoon, probably so the high tides would guarantee a nice selection of shorebirds. That did turn out to be the case, plus some unexpected guests like the rarely-seen and exceptionally screechy Caspian Terns, and one American Pelican, waaaay the heck out on the water, lording it over all the other peeps. I’ve never gotten a good photo of a pelican, and I guess my streak is unbroken :/
But I did get some good photos of another rare (for me) peep, the Black-belllied Plover. There were a couple scampering about, one probably immature and one adult still sporting a partial breeding plumage. Neat!
We stayed till sunset, and you can definitely tell the summer is ending because it got a bit nippy. I was grateful for my car’s warmth in the end!
