Upside down lunch

In which we visit Reifel again

An impulse visit to Reifel, and a quick swing by Boundary Bay over the long weekend.

Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary

A pond, with a few small islands in the middle distance. The water is partly covered in algae and gunk, and there trees on the opposite shore. In the distance, a few bluish mountains are just visible. The sky is mostly blue, with a few fluffy clouds

The fall migrants still haven’t come, it looks like. However, we did have an avocet, a rare visitor to these parts!

Also, a Belted Kingfisher. Not exactly a rarity, I’ve seen them around Reifel before, but this one seemed to go through a rough circuit around the inner ponds, making a racket with its screechy call as it went. This gave me a chance to take some decent photos, though most of the time she stayed up in trees, well hidden from the paparazzi.

Also a Red-breasted Nuthatch! That was fun, I hadn’t seen those teeny upside-down little guys in a while!

Boundary Bay

View from Boundary Bay: low marshy tidal flats, open water, and bluish mountains in the distance. Sky is solid blue

Some of the flowers were still alive and dispensing pollen, so pollinators were still out on the tansy and the asters. I was happy taking a few photos of my buzzy friends and the scenery, from around the parking lot, but I wasn’t much in the mood for a long hike. Some other time!
