Portrait of Christophe Plantin

In the Plantin-Moretus Museum, the original residence and workshop of the Plantin / Moretus printing and publishing dynasty which for over a century were at the top of the game in Europe. This portrait of the founder, Christophe Plantin (1520–1589), hangs next to a gorgeous lacquered cabinet storing knickknacks and jewellery and things.

(They were filthy rich, so they had a lot of things to store.)

Even after the business faltered, the Moretus family kept everything in perfect condition, so when the city acquired the building and its contents in the late 19th century, setting up this museum was a relatively easy task.
